Helpful Tips: Your First Electric Bike

The interest in electric bicycles and other Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) is exploding as gas prices rise across the globe. LEVs are perfect for those who are tired of sitting in traffic or being cramped into crowded public transportation. But with any major purchase, be sure to do your research. Here are 3 things you should keep in mind before making your purchase.

As gas prices rise across the globe, so does the interest in electric bicycles and other Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs). These LEVs are perfect for those who are tired of sitting in traffic or being cramped into crowded public transportation. But like any major purchase, it’s worth doing right. Here are three things you should keep in mind before making your purchase.

Bike or Motor Kit?

One of the first questions you’ll face when upgrading to an electric bicycle is whether to buy a separate bicycle or upgrade your current one. To upgrade your current bicycle, you can purchase a motor kit designed for this purpose. This might seem intimidating - but don’t let it be. All the best electric bicycle motor kits come with easy-to-follow installation instructions. Installation is quick, too. You could get your kit and be riding your new bike in the same day. For those who prefer to be hands off, there are plenty of options for buying ready-to-go bicycles. Both of these options function just like a normal bicycle except with some extra battery assistance. You won’t be getting the same speed and power as you would from a motorcycle.

Know Your State’s Law

If you’re planning to purchase an electric bicycle to use in the United States, you need to be aware of your own state’s laws. Most states hold up the national policy that electric bikes must operate under 20 mph and have a limit of 750 watts. However, the companies who produce these bicycles are not regulated. This means they could produce a bicycle or motor kit that could be illegal. Also, most states don’t require you to get special insurance for your electric bicycle. But you’ll want to check the Internet for any changes in policy that might occur. Since electric bicycles are relatively new, the laws and regulations around them could change very quickly.

Choosing a Battery

When purchasing an electric bicycle or a motor kit, you’ll come across various options for the battery power. More than anything, the choice of battery depends on how you will be using your bicycle. Riding in hilly areas or adding additional weight by pulling a trailer will drain battery power faster. Your best selection would be a Lithium Ion (Li Ion) battery as it surpasses all other battery types in the number of recharge cycles it can go through. Basically this means that you can go longer without having to purchase a new battery. Also, just like all other batteries, these batteries come in different voltages. Though the higher voltages will cost you more money, they will last longer and perform better.

Purchasing an electric bicycle for the first time can be a confusing experience. However, deciding whether you want a new bike or a motor kit, knowing your local laws, and choosing the best battery for your needs will help you make the best purchasing decision possible.

Electric Bike Options - Perfect Transportation for a Better Lifestyle

Amid today’s high gas prices and concerns about global warming, an electric bike is an economical and sensible choice. And beyond that, it’s downright fun.

As gas prices soar and concerns grow over global warming, alternative fuel vehicles are gaining traction. When it comes to cars, trucks, and SUVs, a hybrid is currently the most popular alternative to a gas powered engine. But when it comes to short-range commutes, say 20 miles or less, an electric bike is a fun, economical, and environmentally friendly option. For only pennies, an electric bike can get you from place to place without breaking a sweat and without the hassles of traffic congestion.

An electric bike has pedals like an ordinary bicycle, and you can use those pedals to propel yourself under your own power. But the electric bike also has an electric motor, which you can use to augment your pedaling. The supplemental power is useful when starting from a stop or when riding against the wind. Alternatively, you can let the electric motor provide all the power while you sit back and enjoy the ride. This makes an electric bike one of the most versatile vehicles around. There are even models of electric bikes that fold up for easy storage or travel, as well as recumbent electric bikes, which will take bicycling to a new level of relaxation (just don’t fall asleep at the wheel!).

An electric bike can be purchased as an off-the-shelf item, or you can purchase a conversion kit to convert most any bicycle to an electric bike. The important factors to consider when selecting an electric bike are battery life (which determines how far you can travel on a charge), speed, and durability. Today’s electric bikes take advantage of recent advances in battery technology. Many electric bikes are powered by nickel-metal-hydride or lithium ion batteries, which can give a travel range of one two hours. Most electric bikes are capable of reaching speeds of 10 to 20 miles per hour. Durability is an important consideration, and like anything, you get what you pay for. You can spend under $500 for an electric bike, but the quality may disappoint you. The better quality electric bike can be purchased for around $500 to $1000. Check your local laws, but generally there is no registration required for an electric bike.

Legal and Safety Requirements for an Electric Bicycle

The price of a gallon of gasoline and current economic conditions, have forced many people to consider alternate forms of transportation. One alternative is the electric bike. An electric bike is simply a standard bicycle with a motor attached and powered by a battery. The benefits such as environmental are worth the research necessary to conform to the safety and legal requirements in the area of operation. Legal and safety requirements vary by state and country and some have not yet addressed the electric bicycle in their laws.

Safety requirements are necessary for the safety of the cyclist and the motorist. Some such as a helmet are not a requirement but should be worn to protect the head from injury in a crash. Riding a bicycle on the sidewalk is prohibited in some areas but it should be in all areas. At intersections, motorists are not looking for a bicycle approaching from a sidewalk and may not see it in time to avoid a crash. The main safety requirement for electric bikes is to obey the same traffic laws as automobiles. This means that the cyclist must be able to see traffic signals and signs. It is very unsafe to ride against the traffic and does not aid in visibility.

Legal requirements also depend on the country and state in which the electric bike is operated. In the United States, an electric bike must not exceed 20 miles per hour on level streets. The battery cannot provide more than 750 watts of power to the motor. Individual states have mandated other requirements such as a license, registration and insurance and limited the age of cyclists. Some states such as Florida also require headlights and taillights to be mounted on the bicycle.

Other countries have been more receptive to the electric bike especially those in which the bicycle is the primary source of transportation. Most other countries have defined an electric bicycle in the same was as the United States. The electric bicycle cannot be powered with a battery over 750 watts and the maximum speed is 20 to 30 miles per hour.

For instance, in the UK, the electric bike is considered to be a standard bicycle if it does not exceed 40 kg in weight with the battery. It cannot exceed 25 k or 15.5 miles per hour and its battery cannot provide more than 250 watts of power. It must have operating pedals and teens under 14 cannot ride a motorized bike.

Most other countries have restrictions tailored to the definition of an electric bike mainly due to the wide variety of them. Some countries prohibit the conversion of a standard bike to an electric one by use of the kits. The best option is to be sure of the legal and safety requirements in the area of the operation of the electric bike.

Advantages of Electric Bicycles

An electric bike is a bicycle with a motor attached to the pedals and powered by a battery. There are many variations available from those which add a kit (containing the motor and battery) to a normal bicycle to a custom built one. For those looking to save money during the energy and economic crisis we are facing, the electric bike may be the ideal solution. The kits range in price from $400 to $800 and the custom built ones range from $400 to $3,500. When compared to the cost of operating an automobile, these bicycles can be a real bargain. Riding an electric bike 500 miles can save around 25 gallons of gasoline. This can save the environment and the pocketbook.

The summer heat can take the starch out of any enthusiastic cyclist and hills and long distances can be rough on even the most seasoned of cyclists. An electric bicycle can take some of the pain out of exercising or running errands by helping the rider get to a destination fresh and stress-free. A commute to work can be stressful in a car when dealing with traffic jams but breezing by the traffic on an electric bike or e-bike can aid the commuter into getting to work on time and without the sweat of pedaling the whole time. Time can also be saved looking for a parking space at the destination. Simply lock the bike and get to work.

Most electric bikes are equipped to function without any pedaling required but the cyclist can save battery power for longer distances by only engaging the motor when needed such as uphill or when energy levels wane. By law, the maximum speed is 20 miles per hour and the average maximum range is between 10 to 40 miles depending on the terrain, the weight of the cyclist and the climate.

Most motors run silently and all electric motors are environment-friendly and require very little power to recharge the battery. Small, lightweight trailers can be added for larger parcels and groceries or pouches and baskets can be installed on the frame for smaller packages. Electric bikes can provide exercise as well as help clean the air. Many people have turned to the e-bike all over the world and depend on them for transportation. They do not require a state license plate; and the operator does not need a license or insurance to ride them on public streets. The cyclist must obey the same traffic laws as motorists and motorists are required by law to respect the cyclist in the same manner. The road is a safe place for the law abiding cyclist. The electric bicycle is a perfect alternative to an automobile or motorcycle.

Why Electric Bike Kits Have Grown in Demand

An electric bike kit has several advantages. Let’s not be ignorant about it. This kit has an electric motor, powered by a battery and made for conversion of a bicycle into an e-bike. One of the most important pluses is that this battery can be recharged whenever it runs down. Simply plugging it to the electric supply point can get this done. If you are already used to riding a bicycle, then this converted e-bike is easy and less stressful to ride. You simply pedal your bike to allow the motor kick in. You can now relax and enjoy yourself.

The electric bicycle kit has more advantages than the electric bicycle. In the first place, the electric bike conversion kit is very cheap. If you have a bicycle already, you can install an electric bike kit with a little amount of money. Purchasing a new e-bike could be very expensive. You don’t need to spend anything on fuel. You simply recharge when the machine runs down.

You also have the freedom to choose from the numerous brands of bicycles depending on your lifestyle. Electric bicycle manufacturers are few compared to bicycle manufacturers. You can convert your very own bicycle to an electric bicycle by installing the conversion kit.

An electric bike kit has another advantage. A manufactured e-bike is heavier than a bicycle converted to an e-bike. This makes riding very easy and comfortable.

For physical fitness, riding an electric bicycle is a highly recommended exercise. You can lose extra calories without stress by simply installing an electric bike kit to your bicycle. Certain ailments like arthritis, diabetes and hypertension are best managed by recommending stress less and enjoyable exercises of this sort.

You shouldn’t waste time at traffics. Install an electric bike kit on your bicycle and save yourself a lot of time, fuel and energy. During rush hours don’t use your car for short distance trips. Instead, make use of your e-bike. You will go through any available space on a traffic jam. You don’t have to worry about the need for parking space.

In conclusion, implementing a conversion kit for your e-bike is more economical than purchasing a new electric bicycle. You simply buy an electric bike kit, install it on your bicycle and enjoy your ride.

Electric Bicycle Faq

How do electric bikes work?

Electric bicycles use batteries as a source of power and a quiet DC electric motor as the driving mechanism. Electric bikes have several modes of operation and can be pedaled, power-driven or pedaled with the help of ‘power-assistance’.

Power-assisted vs. throttle controlled?

Most of the electric bikes and scooters we sell are ‘throttle controlled’ - meaning you use a throttle to control the power and speed at which you travel. But some of our higher-end electric bicycles (IE: IZIP Enlightened models) use ‘power assist’ - which is an automatic mode of operation. Once you start pedaling, power assistance integrates seamlessly while you ride and provides the power you need automatically. No extra hand controls or throttle - just pedal and go. Once you use the brakes or quit pedaling, the power is deactivated and you need to pedal again slowly to re-activate assistance.

For people who prefer full control, a throttle provides a traditional feel and operates just like a motorcycle. For those looking for simplified operation, power assistance does all the work and eliminates the need for a throttle. Operating with power assist is comparable to a "moving sidewalk" at the airport - you do a little work - but move really fast!

How fast do electric bikes go?

The speed of an electric bike will vary based upon several factors. With no pedaling, U.S. law restricts the speed of electric bicycles to 20 mph or less. This ensures you don’t need a license, registration, or insurance to operate your electric bike.

Most electric bikes are rated between 15-18 mph by the manufacturer. But the actual speed will vary depending on rider weight, terrain and road conditions. Some riders will be able to exceed the top rated speeds - while others may experience slightly less power. Keep in mind, U.S. law does not restrict how fast you can travel while pedaling, so most riders will easily exceed the top rated speeds while providing human assistance.

How far can I go on a single charge?

The ‘range’ of an electric bike will also vary upon several factors. One of the main factors in determining how far you can travel on a single charge, is the type of battery you choose. Typically, Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries have the longest range - anywhere from 25-40 miles per charge (with pedaling) - but cost the most money. Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries average between 20-30 1000 miles and are moderately priced, while sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries are the cheapest, with only 15-25 miles per charge.

Other factors which determine the range of a single charge include: rider weight, amount of pedaling, wind, road conditions and terrain (such as inclines or declines).

How long does it take to charge the battery?

Battery charge times will vary between manufacturers, models and battery types. Typically, the initial charge will take 6-12 hours. For routine charging, higher quality batteries (such as Li-Ion and NiMH) will take less time - but you should expect to wait anywhere from 2-6 hours for a full charge.

How long will the battery last?

Battery life will vary depending on the type of battery you choose and how well you take care of your battery. Typically, Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries last the longest - anywhere from 750-1000 charges. Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries have a life span of about 500-600 charges, while sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries last between 200-300 charges.

To extend the life of your battery, charge the battery regularly and promptly after each use. If you store your bike for prolonged periods of time, both the batteries and charger should be stored at temperatures above freezing and recharged every four weeks. The longer a battery sits uncharged, the faster the life will be reduced.

What types of batteries are available?

Battery technology continues to improve everyday. Currently, there are 3 main types of batteries used in electric bicycles:

Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) - Lithium Ion batteries are the highest quality batteries available in today’s market. Although they cost the most money, they have the longest life, the lowest weight and the best total range per charge.
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) - NiMH batteries are a mid-range battery type, and in our opinion, the best value. They’re light-weight, have an extended life span and provide great range when compared to the more common (and outdated) SLA battery.
Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) - Sealed lead acid batteries have been around for decades. Although they’re the cheapest form of battery technology, they have the shortest life, the lowest range and are extremely heavy when compared to other battery types.

Electric Bicycle Kit and Hub Motor, Explained

As of now, the world is in the middle of an economic and financial turmoil. That is why each and every individual is doing their part just to get by and save up some cash for even more important needs. From buying food in bulk and using old stuff, people have tried it so that they can get by this tough times. And one effective way of tightening the budget is using more efficient ways of transportation. It is a known fact that petroleum products such as gasoline for cars have been skyrocketing like crazy in the last few decades. That is why several ways to cut back in gasoline-consumption has been bombarding the media today, including biofuel and other alternative energy source. But the more simple people chose to go back to their transportation roots and take a step back by using good ol’ pedal-power in forms of bicycles.

But let’s be honest, bicycles are efficient only if used to travel short distances. But if you’re home is so far away from your work, school or wherever you’re trying to go to, it actually becomes a bit of a hassle. But what if there us a way to give those bikes of yours a bit of power boost? Well, it simple and they are called e-Bikes or electric bikes.

An electric bike, just like what the names implies, is a normal everyday bicycle that has been equipped with an electric motor to assist in its propulsion. These motors as stated by Federal Laws, are limited to only 750 watts of power and 20 miles per hour top speed. Most electric bikes are built to meet that specification But some build them with power exceeding that of what the laws require just for the kick of it. And obviously, they are not going to be street-legal.

Electric bicycles can be built using ordinary bike frames and electric bike kits that cost around $500 to $800 dollars. But there are also e-Bikes that are ready made which goes for about $400 to $3500. Electric bicycles require no licenses or insurance to operate but many states do have age limitations.

These electric bikes have motors that are powered by rechargeable batteries that can run the bikes for an average range of around 20 miles. But of course, the power still ranges depending on the weight of the bike and rider, wheel size, style of riding and terrain.

The most common type of motor used in electric bikes is a hub motor, which is an electric motor built directly into the hub of the front or rear wheel.  An advantage to this design is that no additional transmission system is needed, thereby increasing the efficiency of the drive system. This design also does not require chains, belts or gears. Essentially the motor is the hub of the wheel and contains two concentric rings of opposing electromagnets. When power from the battery is applied to the motor the opposing magnetic force causes the wheel to spin. This type of motor is almost completely silent and requires no maintenance. The higher the wattage of the motor, the more power it provides.

However because electric motors are most efficient at high rates of revolution, this type of motor tends to be inefficient. Integrated planetary gear drivetrains are sometimes included, but reintroduce transmission losses. Also, there are no standards for measuring wattage. Most hub motor marketers use peak output numbers as opposed to the operating output numbers, which means for example a motor rated at 1000 watts peak may be a 500-watt motor in its standard operating output. That is why purchasing hub motors can be a bit tricky at times.

An advice for people who wants to own an electric bike, e-Bikes that are built from kits are usually your best bet when it comes to performance, quality and savings. Building your own will actually give you an option to choose a more powerful motor, better battery, and many other features. Also, you get to choose which bike you can use as your foundation, be it your old bicycle that you’ve grown into or a much better bike than those factory-built e-Bikes in terms of weight and comfortability. A good kit should have the motor pre-built into a wheel, dual brake motor cutoff, a twist or thumb throttle, a motor controller, wiring harness and a battery mounting rack with a lock mechanism. One more tip is to buy a front wheel kit which is easier to install. A really good kit also includes wiring diagrams, mounting hardware, wire ties and complete step-by-step instructions for the installation. Lastly, purchase your kit from a company with good customer support because you would want to be able to call them if ever you have trouble putting up your electric bike. Anyone that can ride a bicycle can ride an electric bike and anyone with basic tool skills can install an electric bike conversion kit.

Electric bicycle is definitely the green transportation that everyone have been looking for. It can provide a very efficient alternative to the cars and trucks we have today. And at the same time, it also helps lessen air pollution and our dependence on fossil fuels. Also, using electric bicycles also give you a little exercise while going about your daily life. Many pros to this very simple solution. True, it won’t solve all of our problems in just a day, but it’s a good start.

Gas Motor Bicycle Kit - The Skyhawk Stage III Whopper Stopper

Because of the high prices of petroleum products, many people have been trying to cut back on their budget. And that includes their transportation allowance. That is why bicycles are again becoming a major alternative to the getting-from-one-place-to-another needs of many people. Instead of taking their cars to work and school and spending a fortune because of gasoline, most people are starting to opt to pedal their way to their destination. But let’s face it, our pedaling power is certainly limited and as much as we want to go fast, we can’t. That is why it is very advisable to start converting your good ol’ bikes into gas-powered scooters using gas motor bicycle kits. These things are far cheaper than using your car and way more environment-friendly. And one powerful bicycle engine kit is the Skyhawk Stage III Whopper Stopper, available at Bicycle-Engines.com.

A four-stroke motorized bicycle engine kit, the Skyhawk Stage III Whopper Stopper comes with everything that one needs to convert most V-frame bicycle to a powerful 49cc gas scooter.
